post surgery: a recap

The tear ducts are clear.

We learned yesterday that the Magpie's surgery was scheduled for today at 12:30 and, while we knew it was supposed to be today, we had been hoping for a significantly earlier time. The Magpie wasn't supposed to eat anything after midnight last night [uh, okay] and no liquids after 9:30 this morning.

So we kept her up an hour and a half late and tried to convince her to eat a little extra to [mostly] no avail. She managed to sleep in 30 minutes this morning. and proceeded to ask for milk, snacks, cookies, apples, yogurt and Starbucks all morning long. We kept her busy with trips to the pet store, Mr.Q's work and the drive to the hospital. The problem? They were running late. Like, say, over an hour late. She didn't get in until 1:45.

Mr.Q went in with her and I made a mad dash for the coffee shop. Twenty minute surgery be damned - all I'd had since 6am was two mini muffins that I scarfed in the kitchen while the Magpie wasn't looking. The only reason I hadn't lost it entirely was the large coffee I made before heading out the door.

**note to self: if there is a next time, eat more. It's difficult to have a coherent conversation, let alone remember to ask all the important questions, with the anaesthetist prior to surgery when one's blood sugar hasn't been on any scale for several hours.**

The surgery went well the docs did their thing. Post-op, the poor little Magpie took forever to wake up. All her readings were fine but, between Tylenol, anaesthetic, no food and a missed nap time, she slept. It took cold cloths, tickling, tissues and a popsicle to wake her and then it was off to see daddy.

Now, after a little more Tylenol, she is sleeping again.

Sunday Edition

I've abandoned the numbering - the roman numerals were messing with my head and, really, who cares? Besides, my brain is still a little fuzzy after all the lack of sleep last night...

[yes, this was filmed in the bathroom, hence the echo going on, though, no, it was long after]

a new commandment

note to self others:

Whom-so-ever chooses to snack in bed whilst watching movies and/or the Business News Network must, afterward, vacuum the damn sheets before his wife tries to come to bed.

I'm just saying....

because everyone needs fishnets and nursing pads

So, how did everyone around here survive yesterday?

Surprisingly well.

I have to say that knowing that she was home with Mr.Q made everything pretty much okay. I mean, I've gone for four hour hair appointments, so really, this wasn't that much longer.... Yes, I did call home. Yes, I did harass pester interrogate make sure everything was going okay. And, yes, I did snatch her away from Mr.Q the second I got in the door.

Okay, that was in part because my poor, beleaguered boobs were busting at the seams. Literally. I had to stuff toilet paper down my bra today and, for the first time in my life, I would have been happy if it had somehow un-enhanced my cleavage.

And, yes, she was happy to see me, but there was no terrible realisation on her part that I had been gone all day. She was not excessively clingy and let me put her to bed with no problems. She did her usual thing.

She doesn't really need me.

ouch.

The dog was the only one who seemed to acknowledge that something was up today. For the rest of us, it seems to have been a one-off: a different kind of day, but nothing we can't handle.

Give me a few more of these days in a row and I'll let you know how I - and the Magpie and Mr.Q - feel about it then... Maybe, just fine.

Overheard outside Starbucks this past Sunday morning before we went grocery shopping:

...people are still going to go to Shoppers [Drug Mart] even if the hookers do shop there...

Yes, I'll admit that I took a look at the two women between whom this comment was shared. I'm not a worldly enough girl to tell you with any certainty what their chosen professions were.

note to self: remember to wear nursing pads to work today. Also, get more from Shoppers.

another note to self

Do not leave your daughter's rice cake on her exersaucer in the living room while you both head into the kitchen to wash dishes and start thinking about supper.

To be fair, I didn't actually tell him to "leave it"...

I don't know what to do with myself

One nap a day kick ass.

I just sat on the couch with my dog, watched the noon news [news? there's news in the world?] and had a leisurely lunch that was not interrupted by a little girl wanting a sip of my water, wanting to pull herself up using my shoulder or wanting to practice banging her snail shaker, her ladybug shaker, her fish shaker or her egg shaker into my arm as I'm about to bring my food to my mouth.

[note to self: the Magpie does not need any more shakers.]

Damn, I am going to get spoiled like this! A peaceful meal that I did not have to wolf down in under a minute: I chewed! I tasted my food! I finished my water! I don't have to put my shirt in the wash!

So, as she grows up and enters the world of fewer naps, I am reintroduced to the real world of regular eating - both in time for my ever-nearer return to work. Just over 3 months away.

joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea

...or at least those at the most awesome, warm and shallow local swimming hole.

We had our first swim class today and the Magpie loved it. Not so much the couple of little bumps to the noggin that were incurred on the trip home, but nothing a kiss and a cuddle didn't cure right away.

But swim class. Six new moms and one grandmother, seven babies and one instructor trying to convince us all to swish our babies around in time to saccharine little ditties. The Magpie was the demonstrator of choice for almost all the songs and games and she did far better than I thought she would. I got a hell of a lot wetter than I thought I would ... but I guess I was in the pool, after all.

Note to self: the locker key turns to the left to open the locker. This will prevent looking like an idiot and contemplating the best way to sneak out, dripping wet and in a swimsuit, to the front desk to ask for help.

another note to self

To avoid the messiness, fussiness and general anarchy that is the feeding rice cereal: microwave the hell out of it. [read: microwave for 10 seconds instead of simply using warm water]

While it may turn into a rather glutinous mass, a la kindergarten paste, the Magpie will actually eat it. Happily.

This does not bode well for kindergarten.

note to self

Keep paper far, far away from babyQ.

Yes, for her first solid food, she has digested the [small] corner of a flyer we received in the mail. So, now, I'm on serious diaper checks. With a stopwatch.

Let's add this to the growing list of things she can go into therapy for later in life...

And, dear readers, I promise you, this is as close to a baby poop post as you will ever get from me.
